Low Calorie Treat: Baked Apple

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Baked apples are an ideal low calorie treat amidst all of the calorie-laden foods that surround us during the holidays. Baked apples are seasoned with many of the spices we love for the holidays — so you’ll get the same “taste” without the same calorie impact. This is a great dessert cooks can choose, especially when expecting guests that are diabetic or those who are watching their weight.

For the best baked apples you’ll want to use fresh apples. Your baked apples will taste different depending on which apples you use. Try using a Granny Smith apple for a much different taste than a Red Delicious apple or even a Golden Delicious apple.

Some cooks actually make baked apples as a high calorie treat but if you core your apples, put them in a glass pan with a little oil and then add half a can of diet gingerale you are ready to make low calorie baked apples. Season them with the same spices you like to use on your baked apples. For many this means using a little cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Every cook adds their own twist to the classic baked apple.
