Alternatives to Birthday Cake
Thursday, February 12th, 2009Sometimes baking a birthday cake just isn’t quite the best choice to celebrate a birthday. Every birthday deserves to be celebrated – but baking a cake that winds up getting wasted because no one is going to eat it is a true disappointment. Baked goods are meant to be enjoyed and shared. Here are some alternatives for birthday cake that are ideal for adults – or even children who may not enjoy cake.
Cupcakes. This is an excellent choice if the adult celebrating a birthday likes the taste of cake – but doesn’t want to be saddled with an entire cake. The cupcake has become quite a popular item lately. Many cupcake bakeries have opened in the past decade; one of the most well-known is in New York City called The Magnolia Bakery. Try a sophisticated cupcake such as a red velvet cupcake.
Bread. Sometimes the best thing to celebrate a birthday is simply enjoying a special treat that you don’t have regularly. Homemade bread is a delicious treat and is fairly easy to make. There are many different types and this is something the birthday celebrant can make sandwiches out of for the week of their birthday.
Cookies. Sometimes to celebrate a birthday you just want something sweet. Cookies are an excellent option because they are portion controlled – simply eat one of two for a portion. You can make cookies healthier by adding nuts and dried fruit. Cookies can also be tucked into a work lunch or enjoyed after meals at home.
Fruit salad. This is a great selection especially for diabetics or those that just don’t enjoy sweets. Making a fruit salad is a way to enjoy fruits in season and is a lovely indulgence, especially with the cost of fruit today. Try adding a splash of fresh orange juice or seltzer to your fruit salad.
