Kiddie Cooks – Teaching Your Kids Nutrition While Having Fun

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Every parent wants not only for their children to eat healthy, but to enjoy eating healthy and truly understand the importance of it.  Children need to be taught through all of their senses; simply telling them that proper nutrition is important will likely not have a lasting effect.  A more “hands-on” approach will ensure that your child truly understands what you are trying to teach and actually enjoy eating healthy.  There is no better way to instil a love of good food and nutrition in your children than by spending some quality time cooking with them.  From simple snacks to helping with whole meals, your child will truly enjoy mealtime if he is the one cooking it. How to Encourage Your Kids to Make Healthier Food Choices

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

In a country where fast food restaurants and junk food are the norm, all parents should encourage their children to make healthier, smarter food choices. By teaching your kids to pick fruits and vegetables over chips and hamburgers, you’re reducing the chance of him being overweight or obese as an independent adult.

Unfortunately, persuading your child to make healthier choices is not easy, especially if your child is fussy when it comes to food. Despite the difficulties you will encounter, it’s better to encourage your kid to adopt a healthy lifestyle now rather than later.

Set an Example

Kids learn just about everything by watching their parents. They learn how to walk and talk by imitating their mother and father, who are the star role models in their life. Since your child is adopting your behaviors, it’s your job to ensure that everything he learns from you is positive.

Obviously, getting your child to eat fruits and vegetables while stuffing potato chips into your mouth isn’t very effective. If you’re used to eating junk food all the time, you’re going to have to sack that habit if you want your child to lead a beneficial lifestyle.

Pack a Lunch

If a school lunch primarily consists of fatty foods, such as pizza and hamburgers, your efforts may go to waste. To encourage your child to adopt a habit, it is necessary for you to be consistent. That means your child must make healthy choices at home and at school.

Consider packing your child a meal if you don’t consider the school lunches healthy. Allow your child to choose healthy foods to include in their lunch instead of empty calorie foods. Give your child some money if you would like him or her to purchase milk from school.

Go Shopping Together

Involving your child in the shopping experience is a great way to encourage healthy eating habits. Allow your child to choose a few healthy snacks for lunch. While shopping, talk about making healthy food choices. If your child asks for junk food, you might offer alternatives. For example, you’d encourage your child to choose crackers over cookies and pretzels over chips.

Teach your child about looking at food labels. Your kid might not be making healthy choices, simply because he doesn’t know which foods are good for him. Set some guidelines and set a good example and you’ll raise the healthiest children possible.
