From Firewood to Microwaves: What is the Future of Cooking?

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

In the 20th Century, two inventions changed the face of domestic cooking irreversibly: the microwave and the TV dinner.

Much has been made of the fact that people on the whole are getting lazier in the kitchen and that traditional culinary skills are going to die out. Even basic cooking skills like poaching an egg are becoming obsolete; it seems that many parents today just didn’t put kitchen skills at the top of their agenda.

Microwaves, TV dinners, and the vast array of fast food outlets clearly have something to do with all this – for many, cooking and preparing food is less of a creative, relaxing and enjoyable process than something that’s just a time waster in our increasingly busy lives. (more…)

Good Nutrition Starts In The Kitchen, But Not The Way You Think

Monday, February 28th, 2011

You might think that good nutrition would necessarily start in your shopping basket, and in a way it does but if you’re only replacing the things you’ve used up then you’ll create a vicious circle of cake and chocolate. The trick is to start looking at not only the food that you serve but also the way you serve it and what you do with it afterward.

If it was simple to break these habits we’d all be Amazons and Adonis’ but habits are insidious and almost as impossible to unravel as the Gordian Knot, like Alexander we’ve got to cut them right out. (more…)

Gifts for New Cooks

Monday, October 27th, 2008

When young adults start out in life, often they must learn how to cook. Cooking is fun — but often young adults are surprised by just how many items they need to cook with! If there is a young adult in your life, it can be a great idea to give them a gift to help them cook for themselves. There are many fun gift ideas that new cooks would love.

Cookbooks are an easy choice for new cooks. There are literally cookbooks for every type of cuisine you can think of and every course in a meal. How to Cook Everything is a great starting cookbook for new cooks as it gives lots of beginning instruction on basic things that cooks learn how to do — and that lots of cookbooks simply don’t explain in the directions. Other cookbooks — like a chocolate dessert cookbook, can be lots of fun to make sweet treats.

Gadgets can be fun gifts for new cooks, but aren’t always necessary. It depends on the cook and their personality. Some people truly love gadgets. They love the idea of using a new “toy” and having the latest of anything that is on the market. If that describes this person to a “T” then you’ll want to consider getting them cooking gadgets. Another reason to get them cooking gadgets is if you know that cooking gadgets would save them a lot of time or money to do something. A pizza stone is a great cooking tool for cooks to own that makes pizza taste delicious. Somehow the pizza stone simply works better than other things.

Classes or cooking lessons can also be an ideal gift. Now don’t think that this has to be a formal gift. You can make up your own gift certificate to teach the new cook how to make special dishes that you know they enjoy. If the new cook has always enjoyed your stews or soups, then make them a gift certificate to teach them how to make these on their own. They will be thrilled to have a little TLC and guidance in the kitchen to get started.

Gifts from the Kitchen

A gift from your heart is the one that matters the most. It is little surprise than many people would give gifts from the heart from their kitchen. You can get very creative and select delicious things to give from  your kitchen. This is an ideal way to give someone a very personal and thoughtful gift.

Flavored olive oil is an easy gift to make and many cooks appreciate this as a gift. You’ll need a fancy looking bottle of olive oil, and herbs and other things to flavor it with. Let these herbs marinate in the olive oil for several days for best taste. Some great herbs to select are basil, tarragon, oregano and thyme.

A jar filled with cookie mix ready to make is a fun gift to give many families. These became very popular several years ago. You can make this look so pretty by lining the items along the bottom of the jar to create patterns. So if you give chocolate chip cookie mix then make lines of chocolate chips and then add in the baking soda or the raw oatmeal and all of the other ingredients. This is a fun gift to give families with young children as cookie baking is a fun gift for families to do.
