What are artificial sweeteners? Well, just like the name suggests, artificial sweeteners are food flavorings that are created in a lab – or, “sugar substitutes.” They include things like saccharin, aspartame, processed stevia preparations, neotame, sucralose, and acesulfamine potassium – or brand names Splenda, Equal, Sweet ‘n Low, Nutrasweet, and Splenda, among others. Artificial sweeteners may be made from naturally-occurring sweeteners like sucrose or fructose, which leads manufacturers to label them as “natural,” when in fact they are not at all natural to your body.
