<g:plusone size="standard" count="true" url="http://www.foodclassics.com/blog/2012/05/artificial-sweeteners-why-you-should-avoid-them-altogether/"></g:plusone>

These days, it seems that artificial sweeteners are making a lot of headlines, and for all the wrong reasons. Artificial sweeteners are a common constituent in diet and so-called “health” foods, but actually appear to work against good health, and in a number of ways. If you ingest artificial sweeteners on a regular basis, then you need to rethink your food and drink choices. Need some convincing? Here is more about artificial sweeteners and why you should avoid them altogether:

What are artificial sweeteners? Well, just like the name suggests, artificial sweeteners are food flavorings that are created in a lab – or, “sugar substitutes.” They include things like saccharin, aspartame, processed stevia preparations, neotame, sucralose, and acesulfamine potassium – or brand names Splenda, Equal, Sweet ‘n Low, Nutrasweet, and Splenda, among others. Artificial sweeteners may be made from naturally-occurring sweeteners like sucrose or fructose, which leads manufacturers to label them as “natural,” when in fact they are not at all natural to your body.

<script type="text/javascript"

Weight gain. Although many people consume artificial sweeteners as a means to control their weight, it appears that the opposite actually occurs. Studies show that people who drink diet soft drinks are more likely to gain weight than lose it. Doctors theorize that sweet tastes actually induce the appetite, making you want to eat and drink more, and artificial sweeteners do nothing to abate the food reward centers of the brain, which are responsible for cutting your appetite off; therefore, you are merely consuming more and craving more at the same time.

Other health-related risks. A number of artificial sweeteners have been linked to cancer growth in a laboratory setting, and artificial sweeteners have come under investigation for a variety of other illnesses and health conditions, including diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, mental retardation, premature birth, fibromyalgia, brain tumors, birth defects, hearing loss, blurred vision, memory loss, emotional disturbances, chromosomal damage, nervous system damage, chronic headaches, allergic reactions, and much, much more.

Artificial sweeteners have long been touted as a great solution to the weight loss problem: You simply eat “diet” and “no sugar added” foods that contain these additives, enjoy the sweetness you crave, and all is well, right? Wrong. Unfortunately, when it comes to managing your caloric intake, there are no shortcuts, and what you might think is an innocent way to avoid processed sugars may actually be making your body sick. Look over the risks and ask yourself if eating foods with artificial sweeteners is worth it. Chances are, you’ll be moved to avoid ever eating artificial sweeteners again.

Much has been made of the fact that people on the whole are getting lazier in the kitchen and that traditional culinary skills are going to die out. Even basic cooking skills like poaching an egg are becoming obsolete; it seems that many parents today just didn’t put kitchen skills at the top of their agenda.

Microwaves, TV dinners, and the vast array of fast food outlets clearly have something to do with all this – for many, cooking and preparing food is less of a creative, relaxing and enjoyable process than something that’s just a time waster in our increasingly busy lives.

Protein

Protein builds the tissues in the body, including organs, muscles, and immune system. As an added bonus, it is also known for helping to boost energy.

High fiber

Best known for aiding in constipation, fiber is also good for reducing the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol. It increases the body’s ability to absorb sugar, lowering the risk for type 2 diabetes.

Carbohydrates

There are two types of carbohydrates: simple, and complex. Both are needed for a healthy diet. They translate into sugars when digested, which gives the body energy. Complex carbohydrates take longer to digest, so you feel hungry less often. Macadamias contain both.

These are just a few of the nutrients found naturally in macadamias. Others include B vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, and much more.

2. Great natural flavor

Macadamias are highly prized for their distinct flavor. They are excellent just for eating by themselves. Many people enjoy the slightly sweet, buttery taste, and happily snack on them fresh out of the shell. Often, they are toasted either in the oven or in a stove-top skillet to bring out the natural flavors. Thanks to their natural sweetness, nuts need no additional flavoring such as salt. Oil is also unnecessary, as the nuts contain more than 50% natural oils.

3. Macadamia oil versus other oils

Macadamias have always been known to have a high fat content, causing many to believe that it was unhealthy. Contrarily, the oil from macadamia nuts is extremely high in monounsaturated fat, which is very beneficial. Specifically, it contains palmitoleic acid, useful for speeding up metabolism. Rather than causing weight gain, it is actually beneficial for losing it!

As a result of these scientific finds, the oil from these nuts has quickly become more prized. In fact, it surpasses even olive oil in desirability. Not only is the oil healthier than either canola or olive oil, there are many who find that it has a better taste. As an added bonus, it has a higher smoke point, as well. This means that it can be used at a higher temperature without losing the flavor or breaking down.

4. Variety of uses

The possibilities for this type of nut are almost limitless. They are excellent for an added burst of flavor to food dishes. Many baking recipes such as cakes and cookies call for macadamias. Additionally, these nuts can also be added even to recipes that do not specifically call for macadamias. They can be substituted in recipes that call for another kind of nut, such as pistachios or peanuts, using an equal measure of the original amount called for. For those that make no mention of nuts whatsoever, adding a handful of macadamias may help to give the confection added flavor. For example, for a surprise taste they can be tossed on the bottom of a pie crust before the filling is added.

Macadamias are a great additive for more than just baking. They are great cooked with fish for an exotic flavor. Some chicken recipes include a breaded crust made from macadamias. Beef also makes a tasty dish when combined with the nutty fruit, as well as lamb. In reality, just about anything can be cooked with the added flavor of macadamias. Even soup gains a delicious flavor.

The benefits of this fruit do not stop there. In fact, macadamias can be added to many dishes. They can be sprinkled into salads, or ground up into a soft nut butter spread. They make great toppings for ice cream and other desserts.

5. Easy to share

The macadamia fruit is widely enjoyed all around. Many people enjoy its irresistible taste. Not only does it make a handy snack, but they are also enjoyable party favors. Set them out in small bowls around the house for guests to enjoy. Their bite-sized proportion and dry texture make them perfect for snatching a quick handful as you walk by. Mix them with M&M’s or dried fruit for variety, and you get a tasty treat to share! A macadamia nut snack is excellent for bridging that awkward gap between when the guests arrive and when dinner is served.

Macadamias are almost limitless in their uses. With all these great benefits, it is difficult not to enjoy this delicious treat!

John Grant now enjoys spending his time traveling around the world and writing about great nutritional foods such as Macadamia nuts.

<g:plusone size="standard" count="true" url="http://www.foodclassics.com/blog/2012/03/tapas-at-home%e2%80%94the-art-of-small-plates/"></g:plusone>

Tapas are a great accessory to any party. These smaller plates of food offer hearty entertaining over delicious cocktails. Tapas are very popular at bars, as they offer an enjoyable dining experience without being tied down to a full-course meal.

You don’t have to frequent a bar in order to have tapas—you can also serve them at home. Tapas do not refer to a specific type of food or dish. Basically, anything that be served in smaller portions can work as tapas.

What qualifies as tapas?
Tapas come in many varieties. You can serve cold tapas or hot tapas, and you can keep them simple or get more complex. A plate of green and black olives is a great tapa. It may be simple, but it is something your guest will gobble up. You could also get fancy and serve seafood-stuffed mushrooms with a lemon glaze. As long as it is served in small portions, anything can be tapas.

If you plan on serving tapas at home, try to opt for those items that don’t take long to prepare. This way, you can get the tapas plated quickly, leaving you more time to converse and entertain your guests. If you want to serve something a little on the refined end, try to serve something that can be made in advance and simply heated during the party. This way, you won’t overwhelm your guests with a dirty kitchen or miss the party by spending all your time cooking. Don’t worry about keeping your tapas hot, either, as most tapas are usually served at room temperature.

Try a tapas-only party.
If you are having a small get together, ditch the everyday fallback of burgers, hotdogs and pizza and serve only tapas. People engage better when slightly munching on smaller foods than devouring full plates. Plus, as long as you serve enough of them, you won’t have to worry about your guests going hungry.

Tapas work well with parties that involve cocktails, especially wine. Sangria is a great complement to tapas, but beer and liquor can also be served. If you are going to have an array of beverages, make sure to include multiple tapas that complement each drink. For example, a deep-fried tapa will go great with beer while a sautéed and flavorful veggie will taste delicious with wine.

You don’t have to limit yourself to serving tapas at large parties. If you’re having a few friends over for the evening, tapas are a great alternative to the bowls of chips and pretzels or wondering what take-out place to order from.

No matter what type of party you’re having, tapas will impress your guests and allow them to eat at their own leisure rather than be forced to sit down and be proper.

Tapas will help the atmosphere of the party. They’re a step up from potato chips, but not quite a full-course meal. Your guests will be able to enjoy themselves and the conversation of others, and the best part is, so will you. And parties are always better when the host can participate too.

<g:plusone size="standard" count="true" url="http://www.foodclassics.com/blog/2012/03/shopping-for-whole-grains-check-the-labels/"></g:plusone>

Whole grains can be a great source of fiber, but whole grains can also be quite tricky. In fact, many companies try to trick you by saying a bread is wheat, but it’s actually made with refined flour. That’s why it’s important to check the labels. Let’s take a closer look at shopping for whole grains and what to look for on the labels.

What Are the Benefits of Whole Grains?

There are a number of reasons to purchase whole grain products over those made with refined ingredients. First of all, whole grains can be an excellent source of fiber. Fiber not only keeps you regular, but can also help lower bad cholesterol. According to the Whole Grains Council, whole grains can reduce the risks of stroke, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and make it easier to manage your weight. There have even been studies done that showed whole grains can reduce the risks of asthma and lower blood pressure. It’s easy to see that whole grains should be part of your diet, but how do you ensure that you’re purchasing whole grain products?

Why You Need to Read the Ingredients Label

You may grab a box of crackers because they’re wheat crackers or buy a loaf of bread because it claims to be made with grains. Unfortunately, a product’s name isn’t always truthful. It’s important to look at the ingredients label and make sure there are whole grains in the product. More importantly, these ingredients need to be at the beginning of the list. For example, you might see whole wheat, whole oats, etc. What you want to avoid is ingredients that are refined, cracked, rolled or cooked. A whole grain has three layers and once an item has been processed to remove the first layer, it is no longer considered a whole grain.

What You Should Know About Whole Grain Products

Not all whole grain products are high in fiber. In fact, even breads that contain whole grains may only have 2 grams of fiber per slice. When looking at the package, you need to make sure there is 6 grams of fiber or more per serving. Some products now feature a stamp that tells you that the product is made with whole grains.

Whole grains are essential for a healthy body. Unfortunately, companies use very deceiving terms to try and trick consumers. Remember to read the ingredients and to make sure the whole grains are at the beginning of the list.

Although it creates flavorful results, it requires very little fats or oils. Although grilling all kinds of meat from fish to chicken to pork to beef to lamb is quite popular, barbecued veggies are also quite a healthy, tasty choice.

There are a variety of vegetables that you can cook on the grill. You will never get short of choices. Asparagus is one of the more popular veggies that people love cooking on top of the grill. It makes for a delectable side dish to any barbecued meat.

Buying, Storing, and Preparing Asparagus

The first best step to grilling the perfect asparagus is picking the best variety, making sure it is fresh, and handling it correctly.

A good sign of freshness in asparagus lies in the color. If it is bright green, you can tell that it is fresh. The spear must also be firm and straight. If you will have to store it in the fridge before using, wrap a damp paper towel on the bottom of the stalks then place it in a plastic bag. When you are ready to use, take it out and wash thoroughly.

Before grilling, you must cut off the bottom part of the stalk because that is bitter and tough. To determine up to which part is woody, snap the asparagus in two; it will snap right where the soft and stiff part separate.

Grilled Asparagus

There are two ways to grill asparagus. You can cook it directly on top of hot coals or you can place it in a tin foil for indirect grilling.

To grill asparagus in open flame, choose the thicker spears because the thinner variety may fall in between most grates. Coat it with your choice of seasoning from seasoned butter to olive oil. Leave the asparagus soaked in the marinade for at least 20 minutes.

After soaking, place the asparagus on the grill, against the way of the grates. Cook in low to medium heat for about five minutes, turning occasionally. Let it rest for a couple of minutes after taking it off from the grill before serving.

Grilling asparagus in aluminum foil is much easier. All you need to do is to place the cleaned asparagus in a square aluminum foil, season with butter or olive oil, salt, pepper, and herbs of your choice, seal, and then place onto the grill.

Do not overcook the asparagus. You will need to cook it over low to medium heat for 4 to 6 minutes. After removing it from the heat, shake the asparagus slightly to help the butter mixture to coat the spears. Let it rest for a couple of minutes before serving.
