Turkey Chili Recipe
This is a healthier version of chili. The recipe makes plenty for the whole family.
- Meal Type: Soup
- Ethnicity: American
- Holiday Category: N/A
- Preparation Time: 45 minutes to 1 hour
Ingredients
- 3 cans(15oz.) of kidney beans (any brand I usually go with the cheapest, S&W) or you can make your own kidney beans and in that case you will need 1 1/2 lb.s of uncooked kidney beans.
- 1 bottle of hot sauce (preferably Tabasco or Red Rooster)
- 1 lb of ground turkey
- 1 can of diced or whole tomatoes (30-38oz.)
- 2 tsp pepper
- 1 tsp oregano
- 1 tbsp oil (any kind)
- 1 diced garlic clove (fairly small clove)
- 1 cup diced onion1 tbsp of brown sugar (optional makes it sweeter)
- 1 tbsp all purpose flour (optional, thickens soup)
Directions
- Get a pot that will hold about 5 pounds of ingredients.
- Pour the oil in and place the pot on medium heat. Sauté the garlic and onions.
- Open the cans of kidney beans. Drain one can of the all the juice and leave the other 2 cans with juice in them. Pour all 3 cans into the pot. (If you cooked the kidney beans yourself, drain out about half the juices and then pour it all in the pot.)
- Stir occasionally and cook till warm. While the beans are cooking, cook the ground turkey and grind it up into small chunks. Once cooked and grounded into small chunks throw it into the pot with the beans. Add 1 tsp pepper.
- Open can of tomatoes and pour all content into pot. Throw some hot sauce in at your own taste. Stir occasionally and let simmer with the lid on.
- Once the soup begins to simmer add more hot sauce(optional). Then add 1 tsp pepper, oregano, brown sugar. Stir contents in well and let simmer for about 3-5 minutes.
- Add flour if you would like to thicken the soup. 1 tbsp usually thickens my soup up quite well but you can add it as much as you like. Be aware too much may throw off the flavors in the soup.
- Serve hot. Serves about 6 (1 bowl each).
