New Orleans Bread Pudding Recipe
A rich and easy authentic New Orleans bread pudding, complete with bourbon sauce.
Ingredients
- Pudding:
- 1 loaf French bread
- 1 qt (4 c) milk
- 3 eggs
- 1 1/3 c sugar
- 1 c raisins
- 2 T vanilla
- 3 T butter
- Sauce:
- 1 c sugar
- 1 stick butter
- 1 egg
- 3 T bourbon or to taste
Directions
- Pudding: Tear bread into pieces and soak in milk in an extra large bowl for at least an hour. Beat eggs with sugar and vanilla. Add to bread mixture. Stir in raisins. Melt 3 T butter in oblong baking dish (or 9x13 dish). Pour pudding into baking dish and bake @ 350 degrees for approximately 1 hour. Let cool, then cut into serving cubes and place into individual bowls. Top with bourbon sauce and serve.
- Sauce: To make sauce, melt 1 stick butter in top of double boiler. Add 1 c sugar and stir until hot and sugar is well-disolved. (Adding a couple occasional splashes of milk can help the sugar dissolve.) Add beaten egg and cook briefly. Remove from heat and add bourbon.
