Another slight twist on a potato au gratin recipe.

Ingredients

  • 2 large garlic cloves, peeled and split
  • 4 large Idaho potatoes, peeled and sliced paper thin
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 c grated Gruyere cheese
  • 2 pt whipping cream

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325F
  2. Rub the bottom and sides of a gratin dish with the cut sides of the garlic.
  3. Leave the garlic in the dish.
  4. Cover with a layer of potatoes.
  5. Sprinkle with some salt and freshly ground pepper and cheese.
  6. Pour some cream over the whole thing.
  7. Repeat until all the potatoes, cream, and cheese are used.
  8. Place the pan, uncovered in the oven, with a baking sheet underneath for spills.
  9. Bake for approximately 1 hour until the top is browned and the cream has cooked down to a thick sauce.
  10. During the first 1/2 hour of cooking, use a wide spatula to push the top layers of potatoes into the cream every once in a while
